Capturing Mood and Emotion Through Painting and Photography

Suzanne Clifford Clark is a representational oil painter and photographer dedicated to capturing mood and emotion in her work. Represented by six galleries and featured in two solo shows, she recently expanded her practice to include film photography with a 4x5 field camera, enriching her storytelling and artistic vision. Her process prioritizes expression over exact likeness, using each brushstroke to explore form and feeling. By blending painting and photography, Suzanne invites viewers into an emotional dialogue with her pieces, highlighting the interplay of light, shadow, and atmosphere.

How it all began

The Conversational Process of Art

For the artist, painting is a tactile, layered act involving adding, subtracting, scumbling, sanding, and glazing, always using high-quality oils on linen or canvas. The process begins with toning the canvas, followed by a quick painted sketch to establish shadow shapes and values. Working in layers, the artist allows each stage to dry before manipulation begins, with each piece evolving through a unique, intuitive dialogue. The most magical results come when preconceived ideas are set aside, allowing an open conversation with the work itself. This same sensibility carries into photography, where film becomes the canvas and light the paint, particularly in black-and-white images using a 4x5 field camera. Painting’s historical influence on photography deeply inspires this integrated approach.
